ENTRY INFORMATION

PROGRAM RULES

  • The Select Producers Program is open to 4-H and FFA members that are intermediate (11yr old) or senior participants in the Sublette County Fair. 

  • Only one heifer per year can be tagged per eligible participant. A participant may compete in the heifer portion and the cow calf portion of the program simultaneously with eligible animals. Separate record books must be kept for each individual animal. 

  • There are no limits on number of times an eligible individual can participate. 

  • Individuals must own or have a lease agreement for their heifer from tagging through the completion of the second year of the project (Oct 15). Heifer must have been spring born and be only one year of age in the first year of the project. 

  • Breeding heifers will be required to be Bangs vaccinated as pursuant to Wyoming Law. 

  • Heifers will be tagged by the committee with program tag by April 1 of the project year. 

  • The participant and parent must complete the Beef Quality Assurance program.

  • Heifers and Pairs are required to be shown at the fair. Classes are “blow and go”, but additional fitting can be done if participant desires. 

  • Record books for this project will be provided by the Committee. 

  • Participants will earn points throughout the project based on the following: 

  • First Year Breeding Heifer Points Possible 

    • Grooming and presentation of animal 10 pts 

    • Condition, growth and conformation 40 pts 

    • Herdsmanship 15 pts 

    • Record book up to date at fair 15 pts 

    • Interview on project and industry 40 pts 

    • Record book judging 60 pts 

    • Total 180 pts 

    • Additional 18 pts maybe awarded for attending industry related educational forums. Points to be determined and approved by committee members. 

  • Second Year Cow and Calf Possible Points 

    • Grooming, presentation of cow 10 pts 

    • calf 10 pts 

    • Growth and condition of cow 20 pts 

    • calf 30 pts 

    • Herdsmanship 15 pts 

    • Record books up to date at fair 15 pts 

    • Interview on project and industry 40 pts 

    • Record book judging 60 pts 

    • Total 200 pts 

    • Additional 20 pts maybe awarded for attending industry related educational forums. Points to be determined and approved by committee members. 

  • Record books must be completed and judged both years. Record books must be handwritten in black ink. 

  • Record books are due for judging September 15th. 

  • Pregnancy must be determined by a vet no later than Oct 15th. A veterinarian’s statement must be included in the record book. If your heifer is called open, you still need to complete a record book and interview. 

  • Participant/ judge interviews must be completed by Oct. 15. 

  • The second year of the program – calf must be born after January 1st of the project year. To be eligible to take part in the cow/calf portion of the program the cow must have participated as a replacement heifer the preceding year. 

  • A committee member must be contacted to document and tag calf. If calf dies a committee member must be contacted immediately to decide the best course of action. A calf can be grafted if committee members and the participant agree. 

  • Failure to inform committee members of loss of calf at any point will result in disqualification. 

  • Participants will be responsible for making and displaying information posters of their animals. (Optional) 

  • Awards: The top three heifers at fair, will receive awards. 

    • The top three pairs at fair, will receive awards. 

    • The top record book will receive an award. (One from heifers and one from pairs) 

    • Intermediate category 

    • Senior category 

    • The overall point winner at the end of two years will receive a donated heifer.
